The movers finally arrived, a little more than an hour after they were scheduled too, but they have got the lift in place and I am totally geeking out as I watch my stuff get whisked away on the express elevator to the ground floor. I can only hope that I have this much fun when they are all loading it into my new house.
Gotta run, much important supervision to to do.
Where does the weekend go? It seems to have flown by and ended up in boxes strewn about my flat. Keep in mind too, that this was an extended weekend as we had Monday off work here in the Netherlands to celebrate the Tweede Pinkster Dag. I'm not quite sure why pentecost warrants two days of celebration, but any time off work is cool with me.
I also have today off, as I am expecting movers to show up here in a shade under 4 hours time. I've pulled an all nighter boxing all the stuff that I can up so that it will get loaded onto the big truck and whisked away to my new place. At this point, I am so happy that I shelled out the dough to get some muscle dudes to do all the lifting. I prefer the personal touch of hired goons, but these reputible movers will have to do.
It was pretty funny for me to see the order of importance while packing. All the kitchen stuff went first, then all the shared living area stuff. Then a bunch of stuff from my room, followed by a break to go to the new place and to hook my friend up with her new iBook G4. We also sorted her out with about 20GB of music for her iPod (I felt so strange going into the Apple Store and messing around with a glossy white desktop. Don't they know that a proper computer should be black, or preferablly shiny silver?) and then back to more packing. Eventually, I got around to taking apart the entertainment center & xbox 360, and now the only things left to pack are my PCs & laptop. I have been holding out until the very end for this as I want to be online as long as possible. I just feel incomplete without internet access.
I'm really looking forward to being able to see all these boxes in the new house, and more importantly really happy to be able to point and say "you, put that there" as after a night like this I could really use a long shower or bath and a nice nappy nap. But something tells me that I have more unboxing to do in the short term and that chill out I have been thinking about will be some time coming.
It's really late on Sunday night, but I don't have to work tomorrow (Yay Tweede Pinkster Dag!) I figured that I had best get to posting. It's been a busy weekend, but quite productive so far. I've been packing like crazy in anticipation of my move to my new house. The movers are coming Tuesday morning at 11 and I have to have everything boxed & ready to go. For those of you who have never been to Holland, you have no idea of the complexities of moving here. I am just moving across town, probably around half a mile from where I am living now, but it involves some of the most tricky logistics you can think of. First off, I live on a busy street, so the movers have to get a permit from the city to block part of the street. The new street I am moving to runs along a one way canal, so I think that we will block the whole street there. On top of that, I live on the 3rd and 4th floors, with some of the most treacherous stairs you can imagine. To call them carpeted ladders wouldn't be far from the truth. So everything must go out windows. At least the movers have a lift to get up & down and we don't have to do everythings with the pulleys & hooks that they traditionally used.
Another thing I find fun about moving is that I get excited by the stupid chores that I end up doing. For example, I have a chandelier in the entry of my house that looked as if had been there forever. It was covered in dust that probably has been sitting there since they remodeled the facade of the building sometime between 1815 and 1820. Since I had to change the bulb, I figured that I would clean all the glass bits, which involved taking each one off, cleaning it in a bucket in the sink, drying it, and hanging them all back on the brass rings. It took forever, but when it was all finished I was gobsmacked by the difference.
I'll post more pics on flickr.
I suppose that I have to hit the sack. I need to get up tomorrow and get crack-a-lackin on the packin!
